Everyone’s seen a vinyl banner before. It worked to grab your attention but you probably never considered specifics about using a vinyl banner. Custom banners are a great way to catch customers, but if you don’t know about them, it can be difficult to decide if they are right for you. These are some of the most common questions people ask about banners.
What’s the material like?
Vinyl banners are a very thick plastic with a flexible fabric movement. Most vinyl banners have medium gloss, but you can also find ones with a matte finish. Banner printing produces really bright vivid colors. Because they are plastic, all vinyl banners are weatherproof and UV proof.
What’s the best banner size?
The most popular banner sizes are 2’x4’, 3’x6’ and 4’x8’. However, when you want a vinyl banner, your sizes really are limitless, although your printing company may not be. Most companies can print a banner up to 5 ft. high and any number wide because of printer restrictions. In most cases, that is more than enough banner for anyone, unless you’re trying to cover an entire high-rise building.
What is the difference in indoor and outdoor banners?
When a banner printing company says “indoor banner”, it means they are printing on an unfinished banner material, meaning the edges are left unaltered after printing. “Outdoor banners” need to be more durable to withstand the wind and other weather conditions, so most companies will hem extra material to the banner edges before they put in grommets (hanging holes) to reinforce the material and make it harder to tear in wind.
How do I hang it?
Nearly all banner companies will put metal grommets into each corner of a banner. These are punched out holes that are lines with a metal ring. The ring keeps the hole from tearing and makes hanging easier. Some companies will provide a hanging kit, but all you really need is four thin pieces of rope or four bungee cords. The rope can be run through the grommets for hanging or hook both ends of the bungee cord into the grommets.
Can I place it in the yard?
Banners are designed to be hung, whether it is outside or inside, but it is still possible to place them in your yard. This is really common for political banners and signs in large fields or parks. You can use two poles, at least a foot taller than your banner. You will need to find a way to secure the banner to the poles. Some printing companies can add pole pockets to your banner (pockets made from banner material that you can slide a pole through), or you can use a fence pole that has multiple holes, so you can run the rope through the grommets and the holes in the pole for more security.
